Perceived Corruption in V4 Higher Than EU Average

Eurobarometer published a special report on the attitude of European citizens towards corruption in 2009. People in the Visegrad Countries are more concerned about corruption than the EU27 average.
The Hungarians seem their situation the gravest: 96% of the people think that corruption is a major problem in Hungary against 81% of the Polish citizens. The perception changed little in the last 2 years. Only Slovakia could reach a 5% decrease.

Corruption is not only hard to fight, but it is as difficult to measure. With a different methodology Transparency International comes out with a slightly different ordering, but an equally serious result. Their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks the Visegrad Countries range between the 46th (Hungary) and the 56th (Slovakia) in the 180 countries covered worldwide.

As Hungary is in a general election campaign which puts corruption in the focus it may be the case that citizens in this country are more aware of the problem.
