Natural Gas Exploration Abandoned, Result May Help Geothermia

Hungary is one of the heaviest users of natural gas. Most of this gas is imported one way or another from Russia, but the country still has formidable domestic resources. A new field was found near Makó (by the Serbian border) a few years ago. The gas turned out to be extremely difficult to exploit with the current mining technologies, because the Budapest-based MOL and the American ExxonMobil, who have hired the Canadian specialist firm Falcon for the research have given up according to the news of Inforádió, Hungary.

The old natural mines of Hungary are attracting a different kind of industry. The old wells are very cost-efficient means to look for thermal water, and the old mining data may be used and exploited with some skills to find ideal locations for geothermic applications.
